The Costs Of Generating Your Own Power

If you have ever pondered the idea of generating your own power - one very important factor probably bounced in to your mind. The cost. Traditionally, generating your own power has been an activity left to electronics buffs and the super rich, who are able to spend dramatic amounts of money on the systems and modification needed for such an endeavor.

However, all of that is out the window now. Unless you do indeed opt for a pre-manufactured and pre-installed edition of a wind turbine or solar panel. These professionally made versions carry nothing by a price premium - as the parts and components in such systems are available to the general public for a fraction of the price.

So, does this price differential amount to the ability to generate power at a very low cost? Or will it still be the case that building and setting up a wind turbine or solar panel will cost more than the price of town supplied power - in the longer term?

Parts, Time, Maintenance.

There are three things that you need to consider when pricing an energy generation project. Firstly, how much will it cost to buy the parts, and build it. Of course - here are the things that you will need to invest in, to get this initial stage off the ground:

1. A guide to building a wind / solar device.
2. Parts for these devices.
3. Tools to get everything together.
4. Time needed to spare.

These 4 things will obviously vary from project to project - so it is very much up to you to ensure that these things fit in to your allowable budget. If so, you could realistically expect a long term cost benefit from such a device being installed in your home.

However, one final cost is the maintenance factor. You need to ensure that once you have put effort, time, and money in to creating and installing the device - the continuation of it's life and purpose is preserved. Basically, this means that you need to maintain the device. If a part begins to show signs of wear and tear - it will need to be replaced.

Of course, this doesn't happen very often - but it is definitely something you should be considering before you embark on a self power generation project.
